Degree Program Structure

To maximize effective and interactive learning experiences for students of different horizons, the College of Management designs a flexible degree program structure for the Global Master of Business Administration (GMBA). The structure is expressed by the standard student-credit-hour (SCH) system prevailing in Taiwan’s higher education and conforms to requirements by the Ministry of Education (MOE) in Taiwan. It is also equivalent to that specified for similar programs offered by top universities in the country.

To complete the GMBA degree program, at least two academic years or four semesters are needed. In Taiwan, the first semester of an academic year starts in August and ends in January and the second semester starts in February and ends in July. Each semester comprises 18 weeks of teaching activities. It is within the instructor’s discretion to determine the week for mid-term and/or final examinations or substitute alternative learning activities for examinations.

In Taiwan’s higher education, the Ministry of Education (MOE) sets a minimum level of 24 total SCHs for completion of a master’s degree. The College’s GMBA program requires a minimum level of 39 total SCHs, which is in par with most competing programs. Among the 39 SCHs, 15 are taken from 5 required taught courses, 6 are taken from submission of the master’s thesis, and 18 are taken from elective courses, permitting a balance between core subjects and deepened topics. Table A below summarizes the allocation of SCHs across GMBA courses.

Student Credit Hours (SCHs) for GMBA Program

Course Type Total SCHs by Course Type Note
Required Courses 15 5 Taught Courses in Year 1/td>
Elective Courses 18
Thesis 6 Submission in Year 2
Total 39 Minimum for Degree Completion

Master’s Thesis

The GMBA student has full discretion to choose his/her thesis advisor in the College of Management according to the subject written and the advisor’s expertise. By following required and elective courses over the first year, the student has a diversity of opportunities to discuss with various full-time faculty members teaching GMBA courses as well as those teaching non-GMBA courses in the College of Management. In principle, the GMBA student finalizes the search process and receives agreement of the thesis advisor by the end of the first year of study. The thesis can also be co-advised by two faculty members of the College of Management when needed. The student is encouraged to explore various sub-disciplines in management before determining the topic to be analyzed in the thesis.
